Bullitt’s Infamous Car Chase ft. Steve McQueen

Filmed in 1968, Bullitt’s car chase takes place in the streets of San Francisco, from Fisherman’s Wharf to the city limits. Over 9 weeks a Ford Mustang and a Dodge Charger tore up the city, hitting speeds over 100 mph.

The movie won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Editing and you can clearly see why: the framing champions San Francisco’s hills and winding streets; long shots of sliding, squealing turns cut to close-ups of flinty drivers; and scenes of bottoming out from the driver’s POV causes my jaw to knock.

Aside: only Archer pulls off a turtleneck better than Steve McQueen.
